I was extremely, extremely relieved that Cutting for Stone wasn't a novel about two star-crossed lovers, torn apart only to be brought back together. This is what I feared when the character of Genet was introduced and continued to fear for almost 600 pages. To me, Genet is truly a despicable character. Vainglorious, selfish, unrepentant and incapable of satisfaction. She and Jenny from Forest Gump could have had lunch and talked about the men they fucked up. Instead, Cutting for Stone is about family, fate, heritage, faith and some of the squishier parts of medicine. There's some Midnight's Children in the book, especially the nearly otherworldly coincidences and connections. And also in the ability to send me running to wikipedia every other page or two. There's some John Irving in the book, which makes sense as Irving was Verghese's mentor. There's some Pat Conroy there too, especially in the lavish descriptions of place and the complicated family relationships. With those sort of comparisons at hand, Cutting for Stone is clearly not for the faint of heart.

This is an INCREDIBLY interesting book, but unfortunately I had to return it to the library before I was finished. Curse you, people with holds after me.... So it's on my Abandoned shelf until I get my hands on another copy!

Çok tatlı. Bu Virgin Nehri hakkında sevdiğim tüm "küçük kasaba" şeyler vardı, ama daha mizah, daha fazla seks ve daha az mor nesir. Ayrıca, sesli kitap anlatıcısının kahramanımız wolfshiter Cooper'a verdiği nefis, gruff sesinden çok memnun kaldım :)

Birkaç mil kare arazi üzerine yayılmış gençler arasındaki savaş gibi gladyatöre odaklanmak birçok eşsiz ve heyecan verici karşılaşmaya yol açar, ancak sonuçta son biraz hayal kırıklığı yaratır. Kitap kendini çok fazla hissetmiyor ve üçlemedeki diğer iki kitabı okumaya devam etmezseniz, muhtemelen buna değmez.
