Colfer is imaginative and the action and repartee in the book are non-stop but the fantasy depends too much on violence and tough talk in order to keep the reader engaged. And the devil-may-care attitude towards the value of human life or the seriousness of warfare, though it's played for slapstick, is inherently disturbing. If you like watching action cartoons, you'll find this a step up. If you like imaginative philosophy, moral reasoning or subtle character development in your fantasy reading, this will fail to deliver.
