Well, there's $15.95 plus shipping and handling I'll never get back. Initially, I was very excited to get my hands on this book. Reviews lauded this novel as the next 1984...and while I was of the mind that Wales could never be George Orwell, I eagerly dove into One Nation Under God expecting to be, at the very least, moderately stimulated and moved. Unlike Wales I won't drag this on and challenge your intelligence. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement. Wales portrayed the Christian Right (with which, I might add, I find many and obvious faults) in the same stereotypical light his protagonists argue to fight against. I found it insulting and...typical. If I wanted to experience the joke of theocratic fundamentalism, I'd just turn my television to TBN and watch the pink-haired lady cry her mascara off and ask for my money. What I expected of this novel was to stimulate intelligent thought and lead to an introspection regarding American society, politics, and religious influence. Instead of creating an America that influences some sort of challenge or warning, Wales creates a laughable farce, lending itself more to satirical fantasy (which still manages to prove unmoving) instead of anything close to reality. Save your money and read The Handmaid's Tale. I wish I had.

Horribly powerful epic journey, based on a true story. Highly recommended.
