I wanted to read the book before seeing the movie, and while I haven't seen the movie yet, the book was an excellent read! The story is tragic and deeply moving, yet hopeful as the main character develops into a man and discovers himself through the life of another. It's well worth also from the historical perspective of life after Nazi Germany and the resulting stories of Germans who lived during that time. I'm hopeful that the movie will be as good as the book!

So most people seem to love this book. I gave it 4 stars because I really loved reading it - I was thinking about it when I wasn't reading, and finished it in my back yard hammock with my dog at my side. What I didn't love was the ending. It felt rushed to me. For all of the painstaking detail the author went through to get all of the back and forth just right, it felt like she realized she needed to end the book, went back and planted a few things in the earlier pages, and made the ending chaotic and vague. I was disappointed with that, but had a really fun reading experience, otherwise.
