I wish the description of the book had been better described. Putting the word fiction on the cover was extremely misleading. From the couple of Coetzee books I have read it was already aparent he is not an author to hide his personal opinions. I apprectiate it in his works of fiction but this is better titled as personal essays. There is no masking that this was a collection of essay and lectures so why shelve it in fiction? Some of the topics were of deep personal interest but I would have skipped those that were not if I had realized there was never going to be a development of any sort of plot. Too bad too, I think there's great potential for a developed novel in his personal style, maybe there was just too great a deadline.
This is my all time favorite book. It made me want to major in Judaic Studies in college. (hmmm . . .maybe Michener is the reason I'll never make a six-figure salary . . .)
