waimanwong

better than his full-length monster work Capital.

This book was written in the form of letters and telegrams which made it difficult for me to read at first. I suffered a mild case of motion sickness and had difficulty keeping track of the narrator. About 1/3 into the book I finally found my sea legs and started to relax and enjoy this sweet story. Set in the post war era of 1946, the story follows Juliet, a London based writer who through fate begins a correspondence with an oddball literary group on guernsey island. The story juxtaposes lovable characters and disturbing accounts of WWII. I may have to stop reading these kind of romantic happy ending books. They just leave me questioning my own choices and future. Perhaps I should write my own book where I find love. I could be a modern day Jane Austen giving up my own chance at happiness, but always bestowing it on my characters in their final pages. To make them suffer for months or years across pages and then deny them their happy ending would be cruel beyond words. Having suffered my own heartbreak, I can't imagine inflicting that kind of pain on anyone, be them fictional or not...this started out as a book review, didnt it?I think it turned into a diary entry, my bad. I doubt this will help anyone considering reading the book. Um, you should read it, but take a Dramamine first.
